$$$ Piccolo Mondo, 850 Thurlow, T 6881633. Mon-Fri 1200-1400, Mon-Sat 1800-2200. Italian food that forgoes the pizza and pasta in favour of fish and meat. Small, intelligent menu, great wine list, and decor that is refreshingly simple and elegant.

$$ Bin 941, 943 Davie, T 6831246. Mon-Sat 1700-0200, Sun 1700-2400. Small and intimate bistro with quirky decor, a lively atmosphere and inspirational tapas.

$$ Desalvio's, 1030 Davie, T 6843343. 1730-2200. Casually elegant Spanish joint that has a loyal local following for its authentic food, big portions and reasonable prices.

$$ La Bodega Tapas Bar, 1277 Howe, T 6848814. Mon-Sat 1700-2400, Sun 1700-2300. Long-standing favourite with a quiet, romantic atmosphere, good sangria, and food that is consistently rated as the town's best Spanish.

$$ Rodney's Oyster House, 1228 Hamilton, T 6090080. Mon-Wed 1130-2300, Thu-Sat 1130-2400, closed Sun. Classic converted warehouse with brick walls and wooden beams. Downstairs is casual with stools at the bar, upstairs a little smarter. Well-heeled, slightly older clientele, but the ambience is lively and crowded. Focusing on oysters, mussels and chowder, the food is excellent, and the selection of wine and beers is good.

$$ Simply Thai, 1211 Hamilton, T 6420123. Mon-Fri 1130-1500, Mon-Sat 1700-2300. Owned by the Thai chef, whose food is highly recommended. Interior is bright with pale pastel walls, cream leather couches, graceful curved wood lines and simple brick and concrete floor. Considering such style and the well-heeled clientele it attracts, the prices are surprisingly reasonable.

$ Urban Monks, 328 Nelson, T 6691311. 1200-2100. Vegan ‘Zen’ cuisine. Many options, all healthy. Suitably simple but tasteful decor.

$$$ Borgo Antico, 321 Water, Gastown, T 6838376. Mon-Fri 1200-1500, Mon-Sat 1730-2300. Spacious and classy, with a number of very attractive rooms. Upstairs has big arched windows with views of the North Shore.
