$$$ Borgo Antico, 321 Water, Gastown, T 6838376. Mon-Fri 1200-1500, Mon-Sat 1730-2300. Spacious and classy, with a number of very attractive rooms. Upstairs has big arched windows with views of the North Shore.

$$$ Water Street Café, 300 Water, Gastown, T 6892832. 1130- 2300. Elegant, classy room with massive windows and outdoor seating. Mainly pasta with some steak and seafood.

$$ Buddhist Vegetarian Restaurant, 137 E Pender, China- town, T 6838816. 1100-2030. As well as regular vegetarian fare, they do a fine job of replicating meat-based dishes.

$$ Incendio Pizzeria, 103 Columbia, Gastown T 6888694. Daily 1200-1500, Sun-Thu 700-2230, Fri-Sat 1700-2300. Also at 2118 Burrard. Rustic wooden tables in a large space that’s colourful and casual. First-rate wood-oven pizzas.

$ Hon's Wun-Tun House, 268 Keefer, Chinatown, T 6880871. 1100-2300. The obvious choice, having for some time scooped up most awards for best Chinese, best restaurant under $10, etc. Cafeteria-style decor, huge menu.

$ Kam's, 509 Main, Chinatown, T 6695488. 0930-2000. Equally reliable, but smaller, with a more authentic feel.

$$$ Brass Monkey, 1072 Denman, T 6857626. Daily 1700-0200, Sat-Sun 1000-1500 for brunch. Extravagantly idiosyncratic and lavish decor, featuring a glittery bar, wrought- iron chairs and plush velvet drapes. The menu is surprisingly understated, only hinting at the complex and delicious dishes that have torn many a local away from their former favourites. The great Martinis, the wine list and the affable host all contribute to a memorable experience.

$$$ Café de Paris, 751 Denman, T 6871418. Mon-Fri 1130-1400, Mon-Sat 1730-2200, Sun 1730-2100. Perfectly captures the look of a French bistro, simple but classic and elegant. Food is meat (rabbit, calf's liver, beef tartare, etc) expertly prepared in classic French style. Nice bar.

$$$ CinCin, 1154 Robson, T 6887338. Upstairs. Mon-Fri 1100-1430, daily 1500-2300. Maybe the best Italian food in town. The Mediterranean decor is warm and romantic, sophisticated and comfortable, with balcony seating for those summer evenings. Many awards, mostly for its wine list.
