Dotted Line

$ Stepho's Greek Taverna, 1124 Davie, T 6832555. 1130-2330. Not much to look at, but some of the best Greek food in town, generous portions and prices. Be prepared to queue.

$$ Cat's Meow, 1540 Old Bridge St, T 6472287. Mon-Sat 1100-0100, Sun 1100-2400. Burgers, pizzas, nice appetizers, good selection of beer and other drinks. Funky interior with leather tablecloths and comfy leather armchairs.

$$ The Sand Bar, 1535 Johnson St, T 6699030. 1130-2400. Beautiful renovated warehouse with high ceilings, industrial metal trimmings and vast windows looking out over False Creek. Heated roof patio. Tapas and seafood, wood-grilled burgers and pizza. Fine selection of ales and wines.

$$$ Bishop's, 2549 W 4th Av, T 7382025. Sun-Thu 1730-2130, Fri-Sat 1730-2200. One of Vancouver's undenied finest, with an unblemished reputation for the food and wine list, but above all the warmth and hospitality of the owner/host. All ingredients are 100% organic and mostly grown locally. Menu changes weekly. Smart but casual house-like setting.

$$$ Lumière, 2551 W Broadway, T 7398185. 1730-2200. Often cited as Vancouver's finest restaurant. The interior is elegant, almost intimidatingly stylish and modern. There is no à la carte, just tasting menus from $80-120 without wine, worth every penny. Bistro bar next door has tapas-style dishes at $12 a shot.

$$$ Maurya, 1643 W Broadway, T 7420622. Mon-Fri 1100-1430, daily 1700-2300. Innovative West Coast versions of classic Indian dishes in spacious and exquisitely high class surroundings. The chef will create a menu for you for $22 per person.

$$$ Pastis, 2153 W 4th Av, T 7315020. 1730-2200. French nouvelle cuisine with a small, ever-changing menu using the freshest fish and meats. Taster menu is $65. Another of Vancouver's key players, with decor too casual to match the prices.

$$ The Eatery, 3431 W Broadway, T 7385298. Sun-Thu 1630-2330, Fri-Sat 1630-0030. Trendy, very popular spot for Japanese-Western fusion food. Recommended.

$$ The Naam, 2724 W 4th Av, T 7387151. Open 24 hours. The city's oldest vegetarian restaurant, good from break- fast to dinner, with generous portions. Simple interior and heated atrium-style patio. Live music every night from 1900-2200, jazz/folk/ world, etc. Licensed, with beers on tap and wine by the glass or bottle at very reasonable prices. Lots of desserts.
