$$$ Tojo's, 777 W Broadway, T 8728050. 1700-2200. Hands-down the best (and most expensive) sushi restaurant in Western Canada with the freshest fish, best sake and most beautiful presentation.

$$$ Vij's, 1480 11th Av, W Broadway, T 7366664. 1730-2200.   The only Indian restaurant that is regularly cited as one of the city's best overall eateries, with skilful, innovative variations on old favourites. No reservations.

$$ Afghan Horsemen, 445 W Broadway, T 8735923. Sun-Thu 1730-2230, Fri-Sat 1700-2300. Intimate, exotic decor, featuring lots of plants and ethnic art, and the chance to sit on the floor on rugs. Extremely popular and highly regarded.

$$ The Amorous Oyster, 3236 Oak, T 7325916. Mon-Sat 1730-2200. Cute Parisian-style bistro with very reasonably priced seafood dishes such as Cajun seafood wellington and baked oysters.

$$ Banana Leaf Malaysian Cuisine, 820 W Broadway, T 7316333. 1130-1500, 1700-2200. Beautiful decor with traditional works of art hung on bright yellow walls, and lots of plants. Wonderfully tasty food, including many veggie and seafood options. Recommended.

$$ Bukowski's Bistro, 1447 Commercial Dr, T 2534770. Mon-Sat 1700-0100, Sun 1700-2400. An atmosphere worthy of the name and large portions of food that never disappoint. Lively bar at the back, live jazz Monday, Thursday and Saturday, poetry readings and lectures on other nights.

$$ Delgado's, 3711 Bayview, Steveston, T 2755188. 1130-1430, 1700-2100. The village's best restaurant, but with limited sea views. Beautiful, very Mediterranean interior, with lots of plants and a garden patio. Entrées include paella, cedar-plank salmon, grilled steak with roquefort, rustic lamb shank. Broad range of tapas at $5-10.

$$ Havana, 1212 Commercial Dr, T 2539119. Mon-Thu 1100- 2400, Fri-Sat 1100-0100, Sun 1000-2400. Good for breakfast through to dinner and tapas, but most notable for its lively atmosphere and heated patio, one of the best places to watch the world go by. Interesting decor with graffiti scratched into the walls, and black and white photos of Cuba.

$$ Latin Quarter, 1305 Commercial Dr, T 2511144. Sun-Thu 1730-2400, Fri-Sat 1730-0130. Tapas, paella and sangria in a crowded, party atmosphere with frequent live music.
