Whereas most other Italian cities go to sleep in the summer as the population heads for the cooler hills and coasts, Verona comes alive, transforming from a relatively lethargic place into a vibrant mix of musical and cultural enthusiasm. At the heart of this is the citys famous opera season in July and August, but world-class jazz, pop music and theatre in particular have grabbed onto the coat-tails of the citys annual cultural celebration. Few cities can boast two such spectacular performance spaces as the Arena and the Teatro Romano, and excellent international stars seem only too happy to come and use them. Outside of the summer season Verona has other cultural attractions, primary among which is the traditional Teatro Filarmonico, but also the avant-garde Interzona, an adapted ex-freezer-warehouse in the industrial south of the city. Veronalive (http://www.veronalive.it) is a bi-monthly listings magazine with up-to-the-minute information on whats going on around the city.
