Dotted Line

Caffè alle Fogge, via Fogge 10, T 045 8006831. Mon-Tue 0830-2200, Wed-Sun 0830-2400. Sep-May closed Tue. Under the northern arch of piazza dei Signori a small street leads up to this friendly café with good bar snacks. In the middle of the day this is also a good spot for a light lunch, with a menù of a pasta dish, a dessert and a drink for E15. It’s also not bad for freshly-made sandwiches. At night it livens up considerably, with the narrow line of outside tables usually full.

Caffè Rialto, via Diaz 2, T 045 8012845. Mon-Sun 0730-0100 In the shadow of Porta Borsari , this café has its own piece of pavimento romano under glass in the floor in front of the bar. A plaque on the wall outside marks the peak of the 1868 flood. Alongside a good selection of drinks there are two strangely incongruous posters of golfers on the wall.

Bar della Libreria, Libreria Gheduzzi, corso Sant’Anastasia 7, T 045 8002234. Daily 0900-2400. At the back of this excellent bookshop is a good meeting place, with art exhibitions and good salads.

Cappa Café, piazetta Bra Molinari 1. Daily 0800-0200. Tardis-like, what appears to be a small café opens out into a cavernous interior in a Bohemian style and a small terrace right on the river, looking across at the Teatro Romano. Food is mainly simple but filling pasta dishes, and there is jazz on Sundays. The atmosphere, however, can feel tourist-orientated.

Caffè Tubino, 15/d corso Porta Borsari, T 045 8032296. Daily 0700-2300. Excellent coffee and cornetti are served in this distinctive little café, stacked high with coffee- and tea-related paraphernalia from around the world. The range of teas available is unusually big, and you can buy both coffee beans and tea leaves to take away.

Crestanello, via Ponte Nuovo 8/a, T 045 8032226. Mon-Fri 0730-0000, Sat and Sun 0830-0000. A smart, airy, modern café with a good choice of speciality coffees as well as ice-creams and posh sandwiches.

Puntogi, via Ponte Nuovo 9d, T 045 8009125. Mon-Sat 1000-0200, Sun 1700-0200. On a corner next to the river near the end of via Sottoriva, Puntogi has an excellent outside seating area and is open late every night. A great place from which to watch the world go by.

Du de Spade, piazza Corrubio 2. Mon-Wed, Sat 0745-2055, Thu 0715-2055. A no-nonsense café near to San Zeno with an excellent selection of sandwiches and plenty of character. Popular with older locals.

Pasticceria Barini, 8 corso Porta Nuova, T 045 8030449, http://www.pasticceriabarini.it Mon-Sat 0630-2030. An unusually good selection of cakes and pastries makes Barini, just south of piazza Bra, an especially good place for a morning coffee. It’s also a good place to buy sweet delicacies to be boxed up and taken home.
