Carnevale (February or March) A procession follows a traditionally small, fat character, Papà del Gnoco, through the streets of Verona, culminating with a gran gnocolada in piazza San Zeno, where free gnocchi are distributed. Annual elections for the post of Papà are said to be more important than those for politicians. Festival del Cinema Africano (February and March) With collaboration from the university and the diocesan missionary, Verona’s African film festival first took place in 1981 and was the first in Italy.
