Dotted Line

De Rossi, 3 corso Porta Borsari, T 045 8002489. Mon-Sat 0830-1930. This mouth-watering shop describes itself as a Panificio Pastificio Pasticceria Dietica, which means it sells a great collection of freshly cooked bread, cakes and biscuits as well as pasta, jams, oils and health food. There is also a branch at via Albere 20/a.

Peter’s Tea House, via dei Pellicciai 6, T 045 8034223, verona@peters-teahouse.it Not exactly traditional Veronese fare, but all the same, a good selection of teas and tea paraphernalia, and a free cup of a speciality tea.

Caffè Tubino, 15/d corso Porta Borsari, T 045 8032296. Daily 0700-2300. Good for buying coffee as well as drinking it .

La Salumeria, 33 corso Sant’Anastasia, T 045 592757. Mon-Sat 0800-2000, Sun 0930-1300. A small grocers, crammed to the ceiling with high quality Italian produce: balsamic vinegar, wine, olive oil, meat, cheese and penis-shaped pasta.

PAM, via dei Mulati 3, T 045 8032822. Mon-Sat 0800-2000, Sun 0900-1330, 1500-1900. The best supermarket in the centre of Verona, PAM has all you need for a great picnic, including a good fresh bread section and a delicatessen counter with a big selection of local cheeses and cold meats. It’s also a good cheap place to buy wine and spirits to take home. Spirits offer the biggest savings compared to foreign prices, and are usually cheaper here than at “Duty Free” at the airport.

If price is more important than atmosphere, choice and expertise, wine and other alcohol is often cheapest in supermarkets .

Vini Liquori, via A Mario 23, T 045 8002560. Mon-Sat 1000-0030. Also some Sundays in summer. A fantastic old wine shop with absolutely no trimmings, despite a prominent position just off piazza Bra. Tastings and cigarette smoke.

L’Enoteca, via Sottoriva 7/b, T/F 045 590366, http://www.enotecaverona.com Tue-Sat 0930-1230, 1530-1930. Sun-Mon 1530-1930. A smart place in the heart of the city’s wine-drinking territory which takes itself and its wines seriously. Some 800 m of Roman and medieval cellars are suitably cool and dank. Long banqueting tables here make it a great place for the monthly wine-tasting events. Helpful, English-speaking staff.
