Northern Italian attitudes to homosexuality may be superficially open and accepting, but underneath prejudice can run fairly deep, and much of gay life in Verona, as in the rest of Italy, is hidden from the public eye. The strength of the old fashioned family unit, as well as catholicism and political conservatism, mean that Verona is never likely to become a stronghold of gay society in Italy. However, a lively and active association, Circolo Pink, makes sure that there are always some things happening, be it social events or political activism. There are very few exclusively gay locations in the city itself, although nearby Lake Garda has a much more active gay life. If there is a gay area of town, it is east of the river in Veronetta, particularly along via Settembre towards Porta Vescovo, where the city’s sauna can be found. The trendiest gay location in the city is probably Café Bukowski, right in the centre. It is, despite the name, more disco than café.
