Dotted Line

Balù, 57b corso Porta Borsari, T 045 8036341. In the shadow of Porta Borsari, queues regularly form for the excellent ice-creams from this modern gelateria. The chocolate is especially dark and the panna cotta is unusually rich and tasty. There is another branch at 1/c via Roma.

Orchidea, piazza Erbe 22, T 045 591512. Mon, Wed-Sun 0800-2400. The best ice-creams on Verona’s central piazzas come from this unassuming little café beside the Arco della Costa, leading into piazza dei Signori.

Pampanin, via Garibaldi 24, T 045 8030064. Mon, Wed-Fri 0730-0000, Sat and Sun 0730-1300, 1530-0000. Just over Ponte Garibaldi into the centro storico, Pampanin’s gelati are considered by many to be the city’s best. The selection is neither enormous nor especially inventive, but what they do they do mouth-wateringly well.

Ponte Pietra, via Ponte Pietra 23. Mon 1530-2000, Tue-Sun 1100-2200. Excellent home-made ice-cream with which to wander across the bridge.

Bonvicini, vicolo Ghiaia 5a, T 045 8000148. Mon-Tue, Thu-Sat 1030-2330. An excellent range of flavours is made on the premises and sold in industrial quantities to locals who come to this hidden-away gelateria, on a road off corso Porta Nuova, to buy it in boxes. There are also cups and cones available, however, and as well as Sicilian granita, ice-cream flavours include fig and grapefruit. There is even a range of soya ice-cream.

Ponte della Vittoria, via Diaz 8. T 045 8004276. Daily 0630-0000. Delicious home-made ice-creams with plenty of flavour available at all hours of the day from near Porta Borsari. And at only E0.80 a scoop, a veritable bargain.

Cento Per Cento, via Castello 31. Just outside the castle gates, this gelateria has an interesting selection of home-made ice-creams including a supposedly energy-giving ginseng flavour.

Gelateria, via Ingelheim 28. Tue-Sun 1500-2130. Despite the modesty of not giving itself a name other than Gelateria, this place is worth the trip out of town all on its own. The pistacchio actually looks and tastes like pistacchio nuts, the chocolate is rich and dark and the fruit flavours have plenty of fruit in them.
