Easy and cheap to get to, and small enough to get around, Verona is blessed with a relative absence of transport problems. At the crossroads of major north-south and east-west routes its also exceptionally well-connected to the rest of Italy, making it an ideal stepping stone for a variety of itineraries. Ryanair's cheap flights to nearby Brescia, with a connecting bus service, have increased the city's popularity, and BA flights to Verona have also come down in price. Overland, the train journey from Northern Europe is long but spectacular, as is the drive. Though its small enough to walk around, cycling is another option, especially in the semi-pedestrianized old Roman centre. For exploring the mountains and countryside around the city, hiring a car might be the best option as public transport is patchy. Lake Garda, however, can get seriously clogged up with traffic during holidays and at weekends, and catching a boat is a more civilized, and often quicker, way of getting from A to B. Tours around the city include walking tours and visits to local osterie.
