Arena di Verona (mid-June to the end of August) The 82nd festival of opera in Veronas Roman amphitheatre in 2004 will include Aida (as ever) and Madame Butterfly among its offerings. Estate Teatrale Veronese (End of June to beginning of September) Based around the tradition of Shakespeare in the Teatro Romano, Veronas summer theatre festival usually includes performances of a high-quality English language Shakespeare by the likes of the RSC or the Watermill Theatre. It has also widened its remit to include dance, however, and in 2003 both tango and Viennese ballet graced the Roman stage. Some interesting smaller productions are also held in the cortile Mercato Vecchio, and even in the courtyard of the Casa di Giulietta. Verona Jazz (End of June to mid-July) For around three weeks in the middle of summer Verona overflows with jazz talent. An off-shoot of the theatre festival, concerts are held almost every night, mostly in the excellent setting of the Teatro Romano, but also in the cortile Mercato Vecchio, piazza dei Signori, and even in the Arena. Recent performers have included the Jan Garbarek Group, the Ron Carter Quartet, the Diana Krall Quartet and less well known artists from Macedonia and Cuba.
