E The Nature, Plaça/Plaza Vannes 7, T 963 940 141. Bus 2, 3. Tue-Sun 1330-1630, 2030-2400, Mon 1330-1630. Just off the Plaça Vannes, this is a cheap and cheerful vegetarian, canteen-style place which does a good Chinese buffet lunch or dinner for a mere E 6.

EE La Marcelina, Passeig/Paseo Neptuno 8, T 963 712 025. Metro/Tram Line 4 to Les Arenas. Tue-Sat 1300-1600, 2100-2300, Sun 1300-1600. La Marcelina has been making traditional, Valenciano dishes for more than 100 years. It's slightly cheaper than some of the other restaurants along this famous 'restaurant row' by the port. Tasty paellas and other rice dishes are the speciality, and there' s a terrace overlooking the beach.

EE La Pepica, Passeig/Paseo Neptuno 6, T 963 710 366. Metro Line 4 to Las Arenas. Daily 1300-1600, 2030-2300. Large, lively, perennially popular seafood restaurant overlooking the seafront that has been going for decades. Try the house speciality, la pepica con langosta y guisos marineros. Among the famous visitors, La Pepica counts Alfonso XIII and Ernest Hemingway.

EE L'Estimat, Passeig/Paseo Neptuno 16, T 963 711 018. Metro Line 4 to las Arenas. Mon 2100-2300, Wed-Sun 1300-1600, 2100-2300. Closed mid-Aug-mid-Sep. A pretty, tile-covered restaurant on the seafront with an airy terrace, serving all kinds of paellas and delicious, fresh seafood.

EE El Rek, C/Pintor Martí, El Palmar, T 961 620 297. Wed-Mon 1300-2300. A big, buzzy restaurant on the water's edge, which is a favourite with families and is always packed. It specializes in paella and other local rice and seafood dishes including eels from the Albufera. If you prefer to see your eels in situ, there's a small dock where you can take a boat out for a trip across the lake.

EE L'Andana, Plaça/Plaza Sequiota 7, El Palmar, T 961 620 217. Thu-Tue 1300-1600. A cheerful, old-fashioned restaurant right in the heart of the village with a terrace overlooking the main square. It serves tasty local seafood and rice dishes including a range of paellas, which you can wash down with a choice of regional wines.

EEE El Faro de Vinaròs, Port de Vinaròs s/n, Vinaròs/Vinarós, T 964 456 362, http://www.el-faro.com 1300-1600, 2030-2300. The most fashionable place to eat, this is set in a beautifully restored 100-year-old lighthouse overlooking the port. Dine on excellent, original Mediterranean cuisine including the famous local langostinos and admire the views of the port from the terrace.

Set in a pretty, traditional townhouse in the old Jewish quarter just below the Roman theatre, this serves beautifully prepared food in romantic surroundings. French and Mediterra- nean cuisine is on the menu, with delicious salads and quiches to start, and tasty main courses like magret of duck and rice dishes.
