EEE L'Armeler, C/Castell 44, Sagunt/Sagunto, T 962 664 382. Mon 1330-1600, Tue-Sat 2045-2300, Sun 2045-2300. Set in a pretty, traditional townhouse in the old Jewish quarter just below the Roman theatre, this serves beautifully prepared food in romantic surroundings. French and Mediterra- nean cuisine is on the menu, with delicious salads and quiches to start, and tasty main courses like magret of duck and rice dishes.

EE Casa Jaime, Av Papa Luna 5, Peníscola/Peñiscola, T 964 480 030. Mon-Sat 1300-1530, 2000-2300, Sun 1300-1530. Closed Wed in winter. Try some delicious fresh seafood out on the terrace of one of Peníscola's most celebrated restaurants. The signature dish is suquet, a tasty fish stew, and there are great views of the castle.

EE Coll-Verd de Corinto, Av Danesa 43, Sagunt/Sagunto, T 962 609 104. Tue-Sat 1400-1600 and 2000-2300. This welcoming, family-run restaurant with a breezy terrace overlooks the Playa de Corinto and serves elegant seafood and rice dishes with a creative touch, accompanied by a good wine list.

EE Delmónico, Plaça Cometa Halley 7, Castelló/Castellón, T 964 260 044. Closed for dinner Mon-Thu in winter, Sun in summer. The most original and creative cuisine in Castelló – no wonder this has become the most fashionable spot in town.

EE Plaza, C/Cristóbal Colón 3, Benicàssim/Benicasim, T 964 300 072. Wed-Mon 1300-1530 and 2000-2300. This has the best reputation in town and offers an excellent E 9 lunch menu, or a fancier E 25 tasting menu in the evenings. Delicious and inventive Basque cuisine, accompanied by a good wine list featuring wines from the region of La Rioja.

EE Tasca del Puerto, Av del Grao/Av del Puerto 13, Castelló/Castellón, T 964 284 481. Mon-Sat 1330-1700, 2100-2400. Down by the port, this is a popular, local restaurant serving rice dishes and ultra-fresh seafood, which are based on traditional recipes but have been given a creative twist. There's a good selection of wines and you should try the home-made desserts which occasionally include an unusual tobacco-flavoured ice cream.

E Aral, C/Río Júcar 12, Castelló/Castellón, T 964 247 112. 0800-2300. Aral's tasty home-cooking and cheap menus mean it's crammed with workers during the day and with students in the evening. As well as the traditional dishes, it also does good sandwiches and tapas.

E El Peñon, C/Santos Martires 22, Peníscola/Peñiscola, T 964 480 716. Tue-Sat 1330-1530, 2030-1030, Sun 1330-1530. This simple place offers a a cheap and tasty menú del día.

EE Cardenal Ram, Cuesta Suñer 1, Morella, T 964 173 085. Tue-Sat 1330-1530, 2030-1030, Sun 1330-1530. This hotel-restaurant is the finest in town: old beams, sturdy wooden furniture and an excellent menu of local specialities.
