Though smaller, family-run shops are relatively rare by Italian standards, and good markets even more so, the city does well for Italian high-street shopping. Smart clothes and shoe shops line via Mazzini and corso Porta Borsari and there are some excellent kitchen shops, too, radiant with all the latest Italian shiny gadgetry for making coffee or pasta or slicing salami. There are a couple of fascinating antique/junk shops and a fantastic toy shop. There are plenty of wine shops, some of which offer enormous selections and stunning, atmospheric interiors, but they struggle to compete with the supermarkets on price. Supermarkets and delicatessens also offer excellent Italian food, some of which, such as parmesan, is easier to transport home than others. For Italian design, other than the slick kitchen shops, there are homeware and furnishing shops where you can often buy the simplest items for enormous pricetags, but also beautiful rugs and lights.
