Hardly the most sporting place in the world, Verona has, nevertheless, two professional football teams, an annual marathon, and has ideal surroundings for watersports in summer and for skiing in winter. There are some good swimming pools, too, and since the Veronesi wont consider it swimming weather until its well into the thirties, you can often have large expanses of sun-drenched pool all to yourself, especially outside of July and August. Lake Garda is the centre for watersports, in particular windsurfing, though some canoeing takes place on the river in the city centre. In a good winter, ski-lifts relatively close to the north of the city run for several months, otherwise it may be necessary to head for higher slopes. In the heat of summer it can be too hot for walking except on the higher mountains, but in spring and autumn the hills and mountains around have plenty of scope for walks and treks of just about any length, from afternoon strolls to month-long treks across the Alps.
