Veronas best theatre, and the only real international theatre, happens in the Estate Teatrale Veronese season at the Teatro Romano. There are a few other theatres scattered around the city, but they generally show fairly turgid fare. Since 1948, when Romeo and Juliet was first performed here, Shakespeare has become an annual fixture. A high quality British production is usually the centrepiece of the burgeoning Estate Teatrale Veronese , the Verona summer theatre festival, which now encompasses a wide range of entertainment.
