Hostels are a cheap and friendly solution for backpackers on a budget. Across the world, there are hostels in every city and near popular tourist destinations, providing cheap beds, either in dormitories or private rooms.

For many free-spirited travellers, hostels are the ideal answer for stretching tight budgets when visiting expensive cities. They are often centrally located and provide useful in-house services, such as tour bookings, internet and even food. Hostels are also great places to meet fellow travellers and enjoy a friendly atmosphere among youthful and independent-minded strangers.

During the peak season, it is essential to book a bed in a hostel to avoid disappointment. The most popular places – the ones which are clean, spacious and relaxed – fill up early in the morning. In some places around the world, transient workers, or working travellers, stay long-term in hostels and benefit from a network that helps them find temporary work.

Hostels may be full of noisy and sometimes messy people, but they do provide a fun and adventurous atmosphere which hotels and guesthouses cannot supply. They have canteens and kitchens for self-catering and sometimes offer a staffed bar. The disadvantage however, is that you have little privacy and safety of your belongings can be a problem.
